Description of the work
The first spark of inspiration came from a podcast I listened to one day while I was painting. It was early 2026, and the episode was about the new Pantone Color of the Year: Cloud Dancer. I remember hearing several mixed reactions to it. This shade, a soft white with warm undertones, didn’t win everyone over. Some claimed it wasn’t really a color at all, while others argued, on the contrary, that it served as a base that allowed other colors to shine.
Personally, that second perspective really resonated with me. I also loved the chosen name. To me, it evoked something whimsical, a sense of freedom in the sky, fluidity in movement, and softness in the immensity of the clouds.
A few months later, I wanted to illustrate my own interpretation of Cloud Dancer. I wanted to incorporate a few touches of this Color of the Year, but above all, to convey what it meant to me. As I was going through my photo library, my eye was drawn to a series of images of a magnificent magnolia tree that I had photographed. And there it was: all the elements I wanted to express had just come together. I then combined several photographs in Photoshop to create my reference image.
Ultimately, this piece represents my personal vision of Cloud Dancer: a delicate white that, in places, brings out the vibrancy of the other colors, while the flowers seem to dance among the clouds, as free as the air beneath the sun’s rays.
