Description of the work

This painting was inspired by two magnificent trees located at the Caplan rest stop in Gaspésie. I chose to depict them from a low angle, which accentuates their height and invites us to look up toward the sky, as if we were sharing their deep roots and their common surge toward the light.

What interested me most about these trees was the relationship they seem to have with each other. They have undoubtedly grown side by side, sharing the same soil, the same winds, the same seasons. Yet each seems to maintain its own space, its own individuality. At the treetops, their branches reach toward the sky while respecting each other's space, as if a silent agreement had been established over the years. According to Peter Wohlleben, a German forester, there is a form of mutual respect among trees: each one rises and grows, but not at the expense of the other. Each tree's space is preserved as if to promote coexistence.

In nature, we often find metaphors for our own human relationships. Through this painting, I wanted to highlight this idea of complicity: a mutual presence that does not seek to dominate, but to coexist harmoniously. Complicité is a celebration of the fragile and precious balance that exists between two beings who journey together, giving each other the space they need to reach their own sky.
