Description of the work

Liminality. It all started with this word. It first prompted questions and reflections, then led to in-depth research. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, causing me to experience a few moments of uncertainty. However, this simple word has also allowed me to progress as an artist, encouraging me to explore new creative territories, all topped off with a sense of pride. How did this word evoke such a wide range of emotions?

Liminality is the theme of the collective exhibition for which I created this artwork. I perceived this word as a period of transition between two situations, a zone between what is clearly identifiable and what remains uncertain, between what is completed and what is not yet recognized. A period when reference points disappear, creating a situation of change.

To illustrate this concept, I drew inspiration from a photograph I had taken in a forest in Gaspésie. This forest, which regenerated magnificently after a fire in 1909, perfectly embodies the theme of liminality. It itself went through a period of change, where many trees oscillated between life and death, or between death and rebirth. I chose to highlight the vegetation of this undergrowth, where changing elements, both inert and vibrant with life, bear witness to this transition.

In order to accentuate the effect of transition between what is clearly identifiable and what remains uncertain, I opted for a more abstract approach in the elements surrounding my central image, which is of a realistic style. This approach took me out of my comfort zone, pushing me to represent the forest background in a schematic manner, revealing brushstrokes that defy reality. After several attempts to deconstruct this reality, I finally achieved a result that I am proud of. Therefore, in addition to representing the concept of liminality, I see in this artwork a real transition in my artistic development.
